Patrick Hyland has the chance to fulfil his lifelong dream tonight in the United States. “The Punisher” takes on the slick American Gary Russell Junior for the WBC World Featherweight title. The Hyland family are hugely respected in the Irish boxing community and all three brothers, Patrick, Eddie and Paul have won an Irish title.
In 2012, Patrick took on the big hitting Dominican Javier Fortuna for the interim world title. A slow start to the bout cost Hyland the title but his performance showed that he deserved to be fighting at that level. Fortuna has fought 9 times since that night, adding the WBA Super Featherweight title to his collection and only 2 of those opponents have lasted the distance.
Hyland has won his four bouts since that night, stopping 3 of his opponents. He’ll enjoy a height and reach advantage over Russell and he looks in fantastic condition. In Russell, he’s facing a boxer who throws lightning quick combinations and who showed destructive power in his last bout against Johnny Gonzalez. Russell has only been beaten once, by amateur legend Vasyl Lomachenko.
Hyland is a big underdog but he is teak tough and with the memory of his father never far from his mind, we’ll hopefully see one of the great stories in Irish boxing written this evening.
We wish Patrick the very best of luck
